Overview
Categories are the primary navigation layer of your menu. They organize items into logical groups (e.g., Main Dishes, Beverages, Desserts), allowing:
- Customers to quickly locate items
- Staff to place orders more efficiently
- Kiosks and POS systems to present menus clearly
- Multi-channel consistency across POS, Kiosk, and Online Ordering
A well-structured category system improves ordering speed, reduces confusion, and enhances the overall customer experience.
Creating Categories
During New Menu Setup
When creating a new menu:
- Click Create after entering the menu details.
- The Select Category modal will automatically appear.
Depending on your setup:
- If categories already exist, you can select one or multiple existing categories to attach to this menu.
- If you want to create a new category, click Create New Category.

- If you are a new user with no existing categories, the system will directly display the Create Category modal.

Image Background
What It Does
Using an image as the category background helps customers and staff visually understand the type of items within the category.
For example:
- A coffee image for “Beverages”
- A burger image for “Main Dishes”
This improves visual clarity and speeds up decision-making during ordering.
Where the Image Appears
If you choose an image:
- It will appear on POS
- It will appear on Kiosk
- It is displayed as the background of the top-level category within the menu
Note: Image display behavior may vary depending on layout settings.
Color Block Background
What It Does
If no image is available, you can use a color block as the category background. This provides a clean and structured interface without requiring image assets.
Where the Color Block Appears
Color blocks:
- Appear only on POS
- Only function as the background of the top-level category
- Are visible when the category is configured to display in the sidebar layout
Color blocks do not appear on Kiosk as background images.
Adding Sub-Categories
Select Sub-Category
After creating a category:
- You will see a list of all existing categories.
- Click on the category you just created.
- Select Add Sub-Category.
- Enter the sub-category details and save.
Sub-categories allow you to further segment items under a parent category.
Example:
- Beverages (Parent)
- Hot Drinks (Sub)
- Cold Drinks (Sub)
Best Practices
- Use clear and simple category names (avoid internal codes).
- Keep the number of top-level categories manageable (5–8 recommended).
- Use images only when they add clarity, not decoration.
- Maintain consistent naming across POS, Kiosk, and Online channels.
- Plan category hierarchy before bulk-adding items.
- Use sub-categories for large menus instead of overcrowding one level.
